The PG5 may be my favorite basketball shoe I have played in since the KD12, and I am loving them!
Whats up everyone?? Airjayp is back with another performance review and as you can tell from the title were going to check out how the PG5 performed for me on the court! Lets jump right in and see why these sneakers are that good!
Traction: 3
The traction on the PG5 is nothing short of simply amazing in my opinion. The shoe features the exact same traction setup/pattern as the Kobe 9. Some consider this traction setup from the Kobe 9 to be the greatest setup or pattern of all time! Now, for me personally I am probably still going to stick with the Jordan 1 setup as my all time favorite, but this setup is definitely high on the list! I had literally zero issues laterally, or vertically, and whether the court was dusty or in prime condition the traction still performed awesome. You guys know I love my basketball sneakers to have great traction and if that is what your looking for these will definitely not disappoint! I would like to also note all testing on this sneaker was done solely indoors and I did not play in these at all outdoors.
Fit: 3
For the fit on the PG5 I went true to size and had no issues whatsoever. They fit me perfectly and I felt no slipping, etc. I was definitely pleased with going true to see And if I were to purchase another pair I would definitely stay true to size and not size up or down.
Lockdown: 3
Lets start off by saying if you have read any of my reviews at all you will know normally low/lower top sneakers are normally just not my go to on court. Due to several ankle injuries I normally prefer more of a mid or high top sneaker. Over the past few years I have started playing in more and more pairs of lower top sneakers and have enjoyed some, and also not enjoyed some due to their lacking aspects In the lockdown category. A great example would be actually the PG4. I played in that sneaker for not long at all maybe 1-2 hours and left with a nasty ankle sprain. The lockdown on that shoe was just not good in my opinion. The PG5s were the total opposite for me and they worked out great from a lockdown standpoint! Once I was in the shoe and got my laces tightened up to my liking I felt locked in and no real movement In the shoe whatsoever. As I said previously in some instances a low top sneaker can be an issue for me, but I have not had any issues to this point in these and from a lockdown stand point these definitely are suited for my liking!
Materials: 2
The materials on the PG5 are basically made up of synthetic materials and textiles. The materials are definitely nothing premium by any means, but there is really also no complaints from me as they actually worked out pretty well on court. I normally only give a perfect rating on materials if they are a premium quality and work well. as I said these do not check both of those boxes, but they definitely get the job done. The pull tab on the shoe is made of a pretty thin material that I feel may be easily ripped or come off over time, but that is very minor in my opinion. I do like the materials better than some of the previous PG models and feel like these will hold up and be pretty durable over time. As I said before take all of what I am saying with indoor court use in mind because I didn't test these at all outdoors. The materials are nothing so to speak to brag about, but there was really nothing to complain about either from a performance aspect or standpoint.
Cushion: 3
The cushion on the PG5 was awesome in my opinion. The shoe features a full length air strobel unit, which I have said before is one of my favorite cushion setups! The sneaker feels plush enough to me on court giving me the cushion I need, but still gives me a decent amount of court feel which is to my liking. Sometimes when you put a basketball shoe on you just know they are going to work for you and that's how it was as soon as I put these guys on. I knew I was going to love them. They are very comfortable on foot and after playing in them for 2-3 hours on several occasions I never felt myself thinking or feeling my feet hurt when I was done playing. The cushion/comfort on the PG5 was nothing short of the perfect score I gave them, and they definitely did not disappoint.
Overall: 3
The PG5 is a very solid all around shoe. The shoe performed near perfect for me in all aspects and I really had no complaints about them whatsoever. Previously the KD 12 was a shoe that I really loved playing in, and one that has stood out to me even after testing several newer models of sneakers after. The PG5s are right up there for me with the KD 12 and one that I will be keeping in my gym bag for quite some time as my go to pair!
